Casino Food Entertainment Poker and Sports Amy's Theme Review

Room Quality The "Deluxe" rooms, which are all the rooms that are not suites, are starting to show their age. The bathrooms are standard, with older fixtures in many. We have heard claims that they are renovating the rooms, but we have yet to hear from a single person who has seen a renovated room. The carpet and furniture are getting threadbare. Built in the late eighties, the Atrium Suites are much nicer than the standard rooms. While still not luxurious, they are large and can easily sleep four in two different areas. They have two TVs, two phones, wet bars, and larger bathrooms. The atrium suites make up the tallest tower on the property, and have the best views. They can be had for a few extra bucks every night. The location is North Strip, close to the Fashion Show Mall and the Stardust.

What Does Discount Mean?

Service Quality: Fair, and with an attitude. You're gonna be hard-pressed to find friendly workers in this place. Maybe they just don't have any practice at it since the place is usually so quiet. There is room service and check-in can be a long wait during rush hour. They really don't go out of their way for your comfort, so if you don't like being on your own, you may want to try elsewhere.
What You Get Bottles of in the Bathroom: Shampoo, conditioner. They really don't care if you smell better than the stale-smoke odor in the casino.
Clientele: Middle-aged. If you want to avoid obnoxious young people, this is the place to do it. The casino and hotel are usually pretty quiet.
How's the pool? It's okay, but what's amazing about it is that its construction predates massive lawsuits, so it actually has a deep end. Where most new Las Vegas pools are only three feet deep, this one goes to twelve feet. The diving board has been removed, however.
Free Shuttle: Sorry, no free shuttle to anywhere. (For complete free shuttle info and schedules buy our guide--it's only $4)

Table Games: They have all the games and you'll never have a problem finding a seat because it's a quiet casino. The games aren't real generous, but in line with most other Strip places.
Machines: From a nickel up to at least $25. There is a growing roster of full-pay video poker, which is good news for us gamblers. The slots are kind of old, so don't expect a big selection of your new favorites. However, they have recently begun to bring in more of the new games.
Bet Minimums: They want $5 minimum in this place. It used to have some real low wagers, but now it's just like everywhere else on the Strip. There may be some $3 blackjack tables at the slowest times. They do have 10x odds at craps, with a $2 minimum.
Cocktails? Good. Nothing to shout about, but they'll bring the drinks if the tips are right. If the tips aren't right, you may never see the waitress again. With the casino usually so empty, the waitresses remember who tipped them.
Who Gets Comps? The Gold Rush Slot Club is not known for generosity, so comps are hard to come by for slot players unless you log a lot of time behind the spinning reels. Mailed room offers will come to you if you pull the handles for a few hours. At the tables, the $10 bettor might get some grub, and it's $50 and higher to get a room for the night.

Margarita's: The food is pretty good, but it is not real authentic Mexican. It is more like Mexican chain restaurant. Some people like that, and if you do, you might want to strap on the feed bag here.
Orchard Buffet: This is the newest restaurant at the Frontier and it's a full-blown buffet. We haven't had a chance to try it yet, but imagine it can't be worse than the other choices at the North end of the Strip. Breakfast is about $7 and dinner is around $10.
Cattleman's Restaurant: One of many places here to get a steak, which seems to be all they really serve a lot of. This is the coffee shop and it's open 24 hours a day, with the standard breakfast and lunch fare, in addition to the steaks.
Gilley's Bar-B-Q: To save money, they did not correctly spell barbecue. It's a loud, stomping night club with a mechanical bull, loud music, phony cowboys getting drunk, and all kinds of decent sloppy barbecue.

The Frontier's other restaurant is Phil's Angus Steakhouse, named after owner Phil Ruffin, who is probably too much of a fancy-pants to have any idea how to cook a great steak.

Gilley's Saloon: Loud and live country music. It's so loud it can't be drowned out by the sound of hundreds of new pairs of boots clomping on the hardwood floor. There are low-budget country acts provided for low-cost entertainment.
Frontier Showroom: There's not a lot of live entertainment happening in here, but occasionally they will televise boxing matches and that kind of stuff.

Number of TVs 74. 56 of them can be tiled into 3 big screens or 14 medium screens. At any given time, about half are showing racing and half are showing sports.
Number of seats Somewhere in the neighborhood of 150. About 100 have individual TVs, but you better believe those are reserved, and just show racing. The chairs are really comfy. Don't tell them we said so, but this would be a great place to have sex with your sweetie, considering that it's a ghost town, albeit a plush one.
How many betting windows? About ten, with hand-lettered signboards.
Free Drinks? Could be, but chances are you have to be betting pretty good.
Snack Bar? The Frontier Deli serves up all kinds of grub for your snacking enjoyment.
Minium wager $5 sports, $2 race
Other Notes The hi-tech TV layout is quite impressive. Too bad there's nobody there to appreciate it.

Number of Tables 4.
Comfort of Chairs Poor.
Closed room or open to casino? Not to belabor the point, but the open room doesn't really affect anybody's concentration, because the casino is quieter than a library presided over by a tyrannical librarian.
Game Spreads and Limits 7-Card Stud 1-5: Hold-em 1-4-8/8.
Beginner Games or Classes? No.
How crowded is the room? It ain't.
Comps? Free drinks while playing. Mondays they have a little sandwich buffet in the poker room. Other days, play 3 hours to get a food comp, play 4 hours for room rate.
How good are the players? Beats me.

Where? North Strip
Who owns it? Phil Ruffin
Ostensible Theme Since some people still imagine themselves to be on the frontier out here, the Wild West could conceivably be a popular Las Vegas theme.
Clientele Just like most Western movies, the Frontier is full of youngish and middle-aged men.
Employee costumes Dealers wear denim shirts and armbands; waitresses wear white blouses and black short shorts. They all have fluffy hair, fashionable in line-dancing circles.
Carpet and Other Decor The building looks like a convention center of a mid-sized Midwestern city, except for the palm trees. The only possible clues to the frontier theme are the blocky font on the sign and the covered wagon by the entrance. Country music is piped in both outside and inside.

At the entrance, visitors can take their chances against the glowering slot machine prospector, cowboy, and gunslinger. There's also a historical wagon train scene in frosted glass. The carpet is patterned with wagon wheels. The gaming area is decorated in un-rustic flashing lights and mirrors, but at least the horse paintings on the walls give the Frontier some cred. The entrance to buffet is a brick facade and made to resemble a building in a Western town.

Restrooms have maroon walls and wood framed mirrors, frilly wall sconces, and dark marble. They also have a little sitting area for weary cowgirls.
Food The eateries have "Cattleman's Specials"; the Cattleman's Buffet features several varieties of the meat and potatoes oeuvre. Phil's Angus Steakhouse serves those who aren't getting enough beef in their diet. Margarita's Cantina is the token representation of the Latino contribution to the Wild West.
Games Wanna-be prospectors can join the Gold Rush Slot Club.
Entertainment Gilley's nightclub is a modern day saloon, where urban cowboys can "Ride the Bull" and eat BBQ.
Did it work? This theme is difficult because it's not associated with luxury and decadence the way the tropics or ancient Rome are. The pioneers lived hardscrabble lives, after all. Perhaps it speaks to the yearnings of people looking for a new life. Anyway, the theme does somewhat relate to regional history.
Suggestions I don't know how much longer this place is going to last. It's about as ratty as an unwashed prospector. This makes it unappealing to the tourist set.
